Round and round, you watch them stir the pot of spice, apple cider, and red wine until you feel dizzy drunk on the orange and lemon peels that float to the top. Cinnamon sticks and star anise swirl in the mixture as the waning light bobs behind the tree line. As the evening chill creeps in around your campsite, the fire and smell of warming red wine and spices keep the autumn air at bay. Aunt Brenda looks over her shoulder as she pulls the bottle of wine out from under her shawl and adds more wine, before stashing it away when your mom pokes her head out of the tent. You stifle laughter as the tent zips closed again and Aunt Brenda feigned an exaggerated sigh of relief.
Finally, she pours you a generous helping of her Poison Apple concoction as mom joins you around the fire. The three of you huddle closer around the fire late into the evening to the sounds of simmering cider and laughter.
